Turtle Tracks

It's turtle season here in South Florida. This means that it's lights out at the beach until November -- so the baby turtles will crawl toward the moonlight and the ocean rather than toward the artificial light of the streets.

Here is an amazing picture of some turtle tracks from the water. These creatures crawl onto the beaches, lay their eggs and head back to the water. Nests will incubate for 30-90 days before hatching.

Easy Fritatta

What You Need...
•1 c of vegetables (your choice)

•1 egg yellow

•2 egg whites

•1 T of feta or parmesan cheese

•salt and pepper

Prep...
1.Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2.Place 1 c. of sauteed vegetables to small nonstick pan over medium heat. Use your favorite. I like to use onions, spinach or zucchini or broccoli, and tomatoes. You can use pre-sauteed, roasted or steamed vegetables of your choice.

3.Add 1 egg yellow and 2 egg whites (beaten) with salt and pepper to vegetable mixture. Move mixture around until slightly solidified. transfer pan (with ovenproof handle) to oven.

4.Bake until fritatta is almost firm to the touch. sprinkle with feta or parmesan cheese (1 T) and bake until firm.

5.Voila!

Gyrotonic & Gyrokenisis ~ Coming to the Retreat Soon!

Have you heard of Gyrotonic or Gyrokenisis? Both are coming to the retreat soon! Below is a brief explanation of the two and how they could benefit you.

Gyrotonic - Pompano Beach
Gyrokenisis - Delray Beach & Pompano Beach

The GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® is an exercise modality that guides users to simultaneously stretch and strengthen muscles and tendons while also articulating and mobilizing the joints. Corresponding breathing patterns are engaged during the performance of the exercises, thereby increasing coordination, endurance and aerobic activity.
Juliu Horvath discovered the GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® principles that form the foundation for this novel approach to maintaining health and well-being after many years of study, as he not only tried and succeeded in repairing the bodily injuries that he sustained as a professional dancer using these new methodologies, but he also sought to create a system of exercises that anyone could perform, regardless of age or state of health.

Are your PROTEIN DRINKS harming you?

I found this article pretty interesting -- mostly because I have ingested many of these protein drinks in the past. I've also heard so many of our guests talking about the protein drinks that they take and thought it would be a great post. As it turns out some of our favorite protein drinks could actually be harming us with toxins including metals. Read the article below to find out more.

------

June 2, 2010 (WPVI) -- Consumer Reports is warning people who work out to exercise caution when taking protein shakes. Consumer Reports says it purchased 15 protein powders and drinks mainly in the New York metro area or online and tested multiple samples of each for arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury.

The results showed a considerable range, but levels in three products were of particular concern because consuming three servings a day could result in daily exposure to arsenic, cadmium, or lead exceeding the limits proposed by USP.
Consumer Reports says it found that three daily servings of the ready-to-drink liquid EAS Myoplex Original Rich Dark Chocolate Shake provides an average of 16.9 micrograms (µg) of arsenic, exceeding the proposed USP limit of 15 µg per day, and an average of 5.1 µg of cadmium, which is just above the USP limit of 5 µg per day.

5 Reasons Why DUDES Should Practice Yoga

The Huffington Post has a fabulous article today -- 5 Reasons Dudes Should Practice Yoga. What I love is that the "dude" that wrote this article describes himself as the typical non yoga guy until he tried it. Read below...

By Jason Wachob
The Huffington Post
6/2/2010

I'm not your typical yoga person.
In fact, I don't even come close to fitting the profile of a yoga person. First of all, I'm a dude. I'm tall (6'7" to be exact). Yes, is the answer to your next question: I played basketball. I played for four years in college at Columbia, in New York City. I also was president of my fraternity.
After college, I worked on Wall Street as an equities trader for five years. Did I even mention the injuries I have? Dislocated shoulders, separated shoulders, stress fractures, bone spurs and disc problems. I'll stop there because I'm totally fine -- have absolutely no pain -- partly due to yoga. I practiced yoga weekly for two years, was just starting to get the hang of it, before work travel took over. The discs in my lower back derailed (literally) and I was off my yoga train. I'm only about three months back into my practice, but I'm back on board the yoga train, full-speed ahead.

The Dangers of Aspartame

Along with this week's challenge to not drink any soda or diet soda came the question about diet soda and why/how it is bad for you. Here's a bit of information below. Thanks Dr. Mercola!

Aspartame is, by far, the most dangerous substance on the market that is added to foods.

Aspartame is the technical name for the brand names NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, and Equal-Measure. It was discovered by accident in 1965 when James Schlatter, a chemist of G.D. Searle Company, was testing an anti-ulcer drug.

Aspartame was approved for dry goods in 1981 and for carbonated beverages in 1983. It was originally approved for dry goods on July 26, 1974, but objections filed by neuroscience researcher Dr John W. Olney and Consumer attorney James Turner in August 1974 as well as investigations of G.D. Searle's research practices caused the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to put approval of aspartame on hold (December 5, 1974). In 1985, Monsanto purchased G.D. Searle and made Searle Pharmaceuticals and The NutraSweet Company separate subsidiaries.

Aspartame accounts for over 75 percent of the adverse reactions to food additives reported to the FDA. Many of these reactions are very serious including seizures and death.(1) A few of the 90 different documented symptoms listed in the report as being caused by aspartame include: Headaches/migraines, dizziness, seizures, nausea, numbness, muscle spasms, weight gain, rashes, depression, fatigue, irritability, tachycardia, insomnia, vision problems, hearing loss, heart palpitations, breathing difficulties, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, loss of taste, tinnitus, vertigo, memory loss, and joint pain.

Happy Thursday! Quote for the Day...

“To get up each morning with the resolve to be happy... is to set our own conditions to the events of each day. To do this is to condition circumstances instead of being conditioned by them.” ~ Ralph Waldo Trine

We make the decision each day to be happy or to be unhappy. Let's all resolve to wake up and be happy! It takes less energy to be positive than it does to be negative.

Have a wonderful day!
