Warm Weather Tip of The Day
Don't forget your electrolytes! Stock up on Gatorade or Electromix. If you're outdoors a lot or working out double duty in this heat, make sure you replace those essential electrolytes. You need sodium, chromium, potassium and magnesium.
Hint: Get Gatorade G2 for lower calories!
Stay cool & safe.

It Takes Hard Work to Get Into Your Bikinni!

What it really takes to get ready for bikini season
The bottom line: There's no quick fix.
*Photo by Kirk McCoy - Los Angeles Times
By Jeannine Stein, Los Angeles Times
May 23, 2010
Kourtney Kardashian makes gearing up for bikini season look so darned fun and easy. In a recent issue of Life & Style magazine she explains that she drinks a lot of water, works out with 2-pound dumbbells (while wearing a fun leopard-print T-shirt) and has dropped her chai lattes in favor of espresso shots to save calories.
If you believe the glossy magazines that insist this is what it truly takes to drop 10 to 20 pounds and deflate your muffin top in time for summer, we've got a timeshare on the Gulf of Mexico we'd like to sell you.
The reality? Brace yourselves for several weeks of sacrifice and deprivation, beginning with working out six days a week, twice a day — yes, twice — in a demanding routine of cardio and strength training. Add to that a strict diet regimen that leaves little room for cupcakes and Twizzlers. And those two post-work glasses of wine? Don't even think about it.

Not Getting Results? Rethink Your Intensity Level
Are you really working as hard as you should be? The three key components to working out are FREQUENCY, INTENSITY and DURATION.
Frequency = the number of times you work out each week.
Intensity = how HARD you are working out.
Duration = the amount of time you spend during each workout session.
If the intensity isn't where it needs to be then you could be burning half or less than half the amount of calories as you should be and not challenging your body to change.
How hard should you work? The perceived rating of exertion scale is a great way to start adding intensity into your workouts. Here's how it works...
While doing physical activity, we want you to rate your perception of exertion. This feeling should reflect how heavy and strenuous the exercise feels to you, combining all sensations and feelings of physical stress, effort, and fatigue. Do not concern yourself with any one factor such as leg pain or shortness of breath, but try to focus on your total feeling of exertion.
The rating scale ranges from 1 to 10, where 1 means "no exertion at all" and 10 means "maximal exertion." Which number best describes your level of exertion in your current workouts? This will give you a good idea of the intensity level of your activity, and you can use this information to speed up or slow down your movements to reach your desired range. Add in some of the higher intensity PRE intervals of an 8 or 9 to really challenge yourself. Intervals don't need to be more than 30 seconds to 1 minute at this high intensity range. In addition, intervals can be speed, load, resistance, incline or even a combination.
Try to appraise your feeling of exertion as honestly as possible, without thinking about what the actual physical load is. Your own feeling of effort and exertion is important, not how it compares to other people's.
Make sure to check with your doctor before beginning any new phyiscal fitness regimen. If you have questions at all about these types of workouts, please refer to one of your local fitness experts or Vita Vie Retreat for clarification before beginning this type of training.

Could Your Sunscreen be Harming You?
There has been a lot of information coming out regarding sunscreens lately. Given that fact that summer is right around the corner and the sun's rays are stronger, it's important to pay attention. AOL has posted an article this morning regarding some new info about the dangers of sunscreen. Check it out...
WASHINGTON (May 24) -- Almost half of the 500 most popular sunscreen products may actually increase the speed at which malignant cells develop and spread skin cancer because they contain vitamin A or its derivatives, according to an evaluation of those products released today.
AOL News also has learned through documents and interviews that the Food and Drug Administration has known of the potential danger for as long as a decade without alerting the public, which the FDA denies.
The study was released with Memorial Day weekend approaching. Store shelves throughout the country are already crammed with tubes, jars, bottles and spray cans of sunscreen.
The white goop, creams and ointments might prevent sunburn. But don't count on them to keep the ultraviolet light from destroying your skin cells and causing tumors and lesions, according to researchers at Environmental Working Group.

Yoga May Help Cancer Survivors (CNN.com)
(Health.com) -- Cancer survivors often feel fatigued and have trouble sleeping for months -- or even years -- after their last chemotherapy or radiation session. Now, a new study shows that yoga can help them sleep better, feel more energized, and cut back on sleeping medications.
"We really wanted to find something useful, because right now there are not a lot of good treatments out there for fatigue," says the lead author of the study, Karen Mustian, an assistant professor of radiation oncology at the University of Rochester Medical Center, in Rochester, New York.
Compared with sleep medication, yoga "can be really empowering," says Suzanne Danhauer, a professor of psychosocial oncology at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Sleep medications aren't always effective and can have side effects, and people who've just been through cancer treatment may not want to take any more drugs, adds Danhauer, who studies the benefits of yoga for cancer patients but didn't participate in the new study.

Your facial muscles need exercise just as much as the rest of your body. And facial exercises work just like regular muscle exercises.
Intent.com suggests the following to keep your face looking young:
•Raise your eyebrows as high as you can and hold them for five seconds.
•Open your mouth as wide as possible and stick your tongue out as far as you can and hold for a few seconds.
•Using your three center fingers, press down on your cheeks and smile as hard as you can to raise your cheek muscles against your fingers.

How to Transform Your Lifestyle & Your Life - by Dean Ornish
This article is a great read! It truly encompasses many of life's "diet" issues and how to resolve them in a lifestyle way vs continuing on an unsustainable, unsatisfactory diet.
"Listen, here's what I think. I think we can't go around measuring our goodness by what we don't do. By what we deny ourselves. What we resist, and who we exclude. I think we've got to measure goodness by what we embrace, what we create, and who we include."
-- from the movie, Chocolat
Two days ago, after 16 years of review, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services announced a proposed decision to provide Medicare coverage for the comprehensive lifestyle program for reversing heart disease that my colleagues and I at the non-profit Preventive Medicine Research Institute have developed and tested (http://www.pmri.org/).

Happy Mother's Day!
A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden, fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts. ~Washington Irving

Push Ups - Try This!
Want to take your push ups to the next level? Try one hand on a medicine ball, do 8-10 reps and then repeat on the other side. Having your hand on a medicine ball will create imbalance causing the body to work harder. If you're not quite ready for this advanced move, keep both hands on the ground! Work your way up by eventually trying one push up with one hand on the medicine ball followed by 7-9 regular pushups. Continue to work your way up. You can also start with knees on the ground or in full military position. Consult your trainer if you're unsure of the move or need assistance.

Yes, I Do Have a Green Thumb; I Think I Can, I Think I Can!
I have to admit, I'm not the best with plants. I just wasn't blessed with that good ol' green thumb that others have been. What I can say is that I try. That has to count for something, right? Today I planted my little herb garden. I modeled it after the already made herb garden that I glanced at while shopping at Whole Foods. I've always wanted to grow some of my own food -- not because I truly like growing plants but because I feel like I waste food. If it's growing on my back porch, I can just pick it when I need it! Or, at least that's my plan... :)
